Following an event, or series of events, that threatens a persons sense of safety, people can experience a variety of symptoms including vivid intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, strong or overwhelming emotions. A person may even avoid thoughts and memories, activities, situations, or people reminiscent of the event along or experience hypervigilance or an enhanced startle reaction.
Some people may also experience problems controlling their emotions; feel defeated or worthless, shame, guilt or failure related to the event and have difficulties sustaining relationships and feeling close to others.
Everyone experiences symptoms of anxiety and depression at some point in their lives in response to stressful life events, for example, loss of a job or exams. However, for some people, these emotions may or may not have a known origin and persist no matter what the person does to 'get on with life'.
Symptoms of anxiety can include feelings of general apprehension, anticipation of future danger or misfortune, restless or on-edge, easily fatigued, difficulty concentrating, irritability, headaches, muscle aches, stomach aches, difficulty controling feelings, sleep difficulties, increased heart rate and more.
Symptoms of depression can include feeling sad, irritable, empty, a loss of pleasure in previously enjoyed activities accompanied by changes to thinking, sleep, appetite, concentration, guilty feelings, suicidality, functional impairment and more.
It is also possible to experience symptoms of both anxiety and depression at the same time.
